Earlier this week, while out on my morning bird-watching walk, I was lucky enough to watch this female Canivet’s Emerald (a small hummingbird that you don’t see every day here) stay at the same perch for over a minute.
The Canivet’s Emerald is a similar species to the Steely-vented Hummingbird, and in fact the males of each species look quite alike. Fortunately, the female Canivet’s is distinguished by its eye-stripe, which neither male features and the female Steely-vented lacks. Hopefully the individual in the video above was just naturally itchy and didn’t have a mite problem!
