The sources we frequent for stories of interest appears to proclaim it butterfly season. So it’s incredibly timely that contributor Richard Kostecke should have sent us these beautiful photos of Sulfurs and Whites “puddling” along the road to Chan Chich Lodge.
Basically, this common behavior is when butterflies congregate in damp areas of road or swampy areas to suck up salt and other nutrients. Common though it may be, the clouds of mixed species in the family Pieridae are a joyful sight as they flutter up and resettle to their task.
