Common Sightings near periyar Lake

The Wild Gaur (Bos Gaurus), also called Indian Bison, is one of the favorite prey of the Big cats (Tiger).  The gaur is the largest species of wild cattle. The Periyar Tiger Reserve is famous for the wild gaur population.

Gaur herds are led by an old adult female (the matriarch). Adult males may be solitary.
