In Kerala, there are a wide variety of trees and plants. The Jackfruit tree is one of the most commonly seen. It is a large spreading evergreen tree that produces one of the largest edible fruit in the world. One jackfruit can weigh up to 10 – 35 kg. In Kerala, unripe jackfruit is cooked and served as a side-dish. Even seeds are boiled and baked for making dishes. The fruit is most commonly used in malabar fish curry. The golden yellow coloured timber of the jack tree is widely used for furnitures and houses in India.
Jackfruit is also used in the treatment of various ailments such as skin disease, urinary retention and general weakness.
Additionally, the jackfruit is the national fruit of Bangladesh.
