Heart Throb

There’s something about drums. Like dance, they have an almost primordial capacity to rouse even the most complacent person to action.  The sound connects with the heartbeat and makes it impossible to stand still. Personally I can’t decide whether I prefer West African Djembes, Indian Tablas or Japanese Taiko. Percussion seems to be by nature a communal activity, and the bottom line is that I love the way the sound makes me long to participate.

If you happen to be in Ithaca April 21 don’t miss Yamatai’s Spring Concert. (Click on the image above to read more about Cornell’s first and only student Taiko group.) The ancient art of Taiko is all about community and the joyfully, fluidly synchronized movements between drummers.

The students made the video below to publicize the upcoming concert. A pleasure to watch, it’s impossible to disguise their joy in both their craft and their location.

So if you happen to be in Ithaca…

  1. The description of the drums event is more vibrating than the sound of the drums I enjoyed. so much feeling on this, great Yamatai’s spirit.

    • Thanks ksundaresan! Glad you liked the post. I love Taiko drums and I’ve always wanted to learn to play them. It’s so amazing how the entire body is involved. Thanks again for the comment and stop by again soon! Cheers.
