Kerala offers a veritable array of the performing arts, most of them springing from folk tradition. Though often related to religious rituals and mythological stories, they are also very much the language of the people. Dramatic costumes, vibrant colours, throbbing music; watching a folk dance is an unforgettable experience. Poothan-Thira Kali is one of the popular ritualistic dances of North Kerala.
Poothan-Thira Kali is a simple form of Bhadrakali (goddess) worship. The Mannan and the Parayan communities take part in this folk dance. The Poothan visits all the homes that fall under the jurisdiction of the temple to bless the families and cleanse the village. The costumes of the Poothan, wearing a semi-circular headdress and a wooden mask, give it the appearance of a demon. The Thira is resplendent in engraved headgear to identify with the goddess.
