Common Pierrot Butterfly (Castalius rosimon)

Among the 144 families of butterflies in the Periyar Tiger Reserve, the Common Pierrot is distributed across the forest, flying from January to December in the plains. These butterflies fly close to ground and visit flowers and bird droppings, pollinating and otherwise providing distribution services to their ecosystem along the way. They have a white underside with conspicuous black markings, some of which are square in shape.
