During my stay at Xandari Pearl – another charming property that I visited recently – I had the opportunity to go on one of the Riverscapes houseboats to have lunch and spend a few hours on the famous Kerala backwaters. I think I will remember this experience as the most peaceful that I have lived. Indeed, everything is united to provide you a relaxing and timeless moment.
Obviously the first thing that I noticed is the landscape and each element that surrounds it. It was my first time on the backwaters, and I have to say that this large expanse of water and all the green nature around it is quite wonderful. What makes it peaceful is the fact that you can just enjoy the moment and the view. You don’t have to do anything else! The best part is that except for the lapping of water and some birds, you can’t hear any sounds. It’s the best place to go unwind.
Now, let’s talk about the main element and best part of this day (at least for me): lunch. Of course, having lunch on the houseboat was in itself a great experience but to get a lunch as full of flavour as that one was unexpected for being on the backwaters. The staff served me what they call the Pearl Spot or Karemeen. This fish is THE iconic backwater fish. After grilling the fish in a perfect way, they coat it with a great mixture of many spices that makes the meal very tasty and unique. I really love fish and I can tell you that for sure backwater Pearl Spot is now on my top 5! With the fish we also had other side dishes like some cherra Kurry or beetroot pachadi many things to make a colourful and hearty lunch! After a cup of tea by the bay it’s already time to leave this magnificent place with many new memories. At the end of this cruise I can only say a big thank you! and heartily recommend to everyone what is for me an indispensable Kerala experience.
