Indian Balloon Frog – Uperodon globulosus

Photo: Mr.Kannan

The Uperodon, commonly known as the Balloon Frog, is well known for its ability to puff up, expanding its lungs past its backbone. It has a small head, especially compared with its exaggerated body, with a narrow mouth and a rounded snout.

In Kerala this frog is mostly found in the Western ghats, but its range also includes forested regions as far north as Nepal. Their main food source is termites and ants, for which they burrows into the nests. This photograph was taken by Mr.Kannan, Senior Forest Watcher near Mannakavala, the eastern region of Periyar Tiger Reserve.

  1. Hi Joseph, you guessed correctly with reason #2, they make themselves look bigger when threatened. Although luckily for these guys they don’t live in the same habitat as bullfrogs, where size doesn’t matter when it comes to assessing what constitutes an edible meal! Thanks for commenting and stop by again soon!
