The Periyar Nature Walk gives visitors the opportunity to explore the dense Periyar wilderness, enjoying nature, sighting wildlife, hearing the rustle of wind and smelling the wild blossoms. The trek often passes through evergreen and moist deciduous forest interspersed with marshy grasslands.
A well trained tribal guide escorts a maximum of 5 visitors into the reserve. The three hour trek is offered from multiple times per day, beginning at 07:00 am, generally the optimal time for animal sightings. The four to five kilometer long nature trail allows guests to explore diverse habitats amid the “tourist zone” of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. The reserve is over 900 sq kilometers, so there are no guarantees to encounter animals, but the trek offers a great opportunity to commune with nature, and take a closer look at the local flora and when lucky, fauna as well.
