Coracles are local fishing crafts that are circular and ideal for navigating river waters. These traditional vessels are made out of reeds and the design is believed to have been used for centuries. They are mainly used for fishing and river crossings.

These boats are amazing! I haven’t seen anything like it before. Have you all encountered anyone offering classes to teach the craft?
Hi Michaela, we’ve never heard of anyone teaching how to make them–That’s a great idea though and something that would be wonderful to document if it happens. They’re a regular sight on the rivers and backwaters of South India, we’ve been in them on river crossings in Karnataka and it’s a bit of a balancing act. A little research on them led to the discovery that they are also a traditional style from Wales, believe it or not!
How absolutely gorgeous. Do you have any idea how they are waterproofed?
Hi Jenny, traditionally the water facing side of the reeds was lined with animal skin with a thin coat of tar. I believe now the skin is replaced by canvas , but there must be some vessels with traditional materials still afloat. Thanks for the comment!
Brilliant!
