Theyyam is based on a traditional belief system, and is a self-contained world without obligations to caste, community, society and religious faith. Fire has a major presence in many Theyyam myths.

In the dark of the night the fiery red of costumes and elaborate make-up stand in stark contrast to the glittering sparks.

    • Hi Beate. No perishing is mentioned in this post, and certainly there is no lack of knowledge implied. Beliefs inform the traditions of these folk, and knowledge informs their actions according to those traditions, including how to dance in fire without getting burned. Pretty amazing. Thanks for your comment.

  1. It is an amazing traditional ritual from Kerala. Especially northern side of Kerala “Gods own Country” the Malabar. It is believed and popularly known that the Theyyams represents God. In this photo, the person costumed in Theyya kolam is doing the ritual custom art performance with fire. Even though the Theyyam stands and does many performance in fire, his body will not get burned. But the audience surrounding the fire can’t even reach by 3 to 4 meters. It really is more than Amazing. It is unbelievable.
