The tranquil backwaters of Kerala turn into a sports arena once every year as more than a dozen snake boats, some manned by 100- 125 oarsmen, fiercely compete with each other in the boat races called “Vallamkali”. Vallamkali are an integral part of the history and culture of the people of Kerala.

Snake boat races are genuinely thrilling  even for an outsider who is unaware of the pride that is at stake. The entire stretch of the backwaters  becomes “God’s own stadium”. The fierce determination of the competitors, combined with the wholehearted participation of the spectators in such a naturally beautiful setting, make it an unforgettable experience.
