Salticidae

Salticidae, better known as jumping spiders, are a curious family of spider that comprises ~13% of the order. They are best known for their two large anterior median eyes flanked by a smaller set, giving them exquisite vision, as well as their ability to jump distances many times the length of their own bodies.  Their unmistakable body structure, most notably the enlarged cephalothorax, makes them an easily recognizable family; and due to their reliance on vision to hunt prey, Salticidae are primarily diurnal hunters.

Resist the urge to squish this extremely interesting family of spiders and give them a closer look because you can often find yourself being looked back at.  Salticids display intelligent behavior and acute observations of their surroundings — research has shown that they are able to adapt new hunting strategies and behaviors in order to capture prey if another strategy fails.

Salticidae are an amazing addition to their order and one of the more sympathetic in terms of human reaction due to their non-menacing, and sometimes even cute, appearance.

    • There’s no reason to fear this little fellas, I would go so far as to say you can even play with jumping spiders as I often have. If you have an especially curious one nearby you can move your hand around his vision and even watch him adjust his body to observe the movements. If you really want to see something amazing you can even try to hold your hand out for one and it might tether a line of silk at its position and jump into your hands! These guys are very smart and active!
